Dr. Bill Livesay
Livesay Consultants
Over forty years experience in all aspects of the drilling engineering for oil, gas and geothermal resources.
Experienced in the design of equipment and the technology of drilling gained through consulting as drilling
engineer, builder and researcher of equipment, development of instrumentation and technical operations
development. Recent work on Multi-Year DOE Plan, EGS Feasibility, GETEM cost modeling, Roadmapping for
DOE Geothermal Program and Risk Analysis of DOE Geothermal Program results.
Varied work experience has permitted Livesay to see drilling technology from all three critical viewpoints.
First as a drilling engineer as a consultant and at Exxon, secondly as a researcher and developer of drilling
technology and builder of drilling equipment as Research Manager of Dresser Security and finally as a
researcher of drilling technology as Professor of Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering at The University of
Tulsa. Other experiences include offshore operations and offshore platform analysis and design for Exxon
Production Research in Houston. Livesay also was Managing Director of the Kennecott Ocean Mining Lab in
San Diego.
During the 29 years as a consultant Livesay has been involved in numerous studies and development
projects through Sandia National Laboratories and for industrial clients such as Unocal Geothermal,
Constellation Power Inc, Caithness, Philippine National Oil Company Energy Development Company
(geothermal) and Mesquite Group. For Sandia has investigated geothermal cost of power from the perspective
of the geothermal utility industry. Performed systems studies of cost of geothermal wells in California, Nevada,
Hawaii and Utah. Livesay also developed and taught courses in drilling engineering and technology for Amoco
Petroleum, Unocal, Puna Geothermal Ventures, Sandia National Labs and the Geothermal Resource Council.
Livesay has been involved in geothermal drilling operations and analysis for Sandia National Laboratories, Drill
Cool, California Energy Commission, Unocal, Soda Lake Geothermal Power, Puna Geothermal Ventures,
Caithness Operating Company, and ThermaSource Inc.. Livesay has also been expert witness for Smith Tool
Co, Dresser Security and Hughes Tool in significant litigations.
Livesay has some 30 plus publications covering most aspects of drilling equipment, techniques and
procedures.
Educational background includes a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University and a
PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State University. 2006
